Running Shorts

running_shorts_a.PNGChoosing the right running shorts is as challenging as choosing the right running shoes. It depends on a lot of factors such as design, model, type, features, size, fit and color. We begin our search by outlining the different types of running shorts, the most common of which are: cycling shorts or compression shorts, long or medium cut running shorts, and the very minimal racing shorts. Pinoy Ultra Runners at the start of the 94km SCTEX ultra marathon. Members used different types of shorts to complete the course.

After deciding which type of shorts we need, we turn our focus now on the materials used. Quick-dry materials are the key, because it maintains dryness and does not feel heavy while running. Examples of such are Lycra, Dri-fit, Cool Max, Spandex, Clima Cool and Supplex. A synthetic material will provide better comfort and protection in the long run.

For some runners, draw cords are necessary because it keeps the shorts snug and tight and can also be used to attach one’s car or bike keys. Shorts pockets are also most welcome because it can hold essentials such as energy bars, some cash and identification cards.

The number of seams and its position are also important in choosing good running shorts. Shorts with more seams make the shorts heavy because of the added threads. Moreover, improper and numerous seams can be bulky and rough. This can cause chaffing, wherein the fabric rubs to and irritates the skin, causing lesions. Ultra marathoner Dean Karnazes, in his list of essential running equipment, recommends apparels with less seams and stitches. The North Face offers running apparels with fabrics that are thermally bonded, needing not much seams and stitches. The process of thermally bonding is very technical and a tad more expensive than ordinary fabric stitching.

The fit of course is the most important part of choosing the right running shorts. A wrong fit can cause scratches and even constrict movements, so make sure to fit before buying.

For the shorts’ color, pick something visible if you mostly run at night. Make sure it has a reflective tape. If you’re a daylight runner, make sure it’s a lighter or cooler color so it won’t trap too much heat. You can also choose fast colors, which some people claim can give you a psychological advantage.

Last but not the least of advices: don’t buy something you don’t feel comfortable in while running. Let’s look at some popular designs of running shorts in the market.

Hate: Cycling shorts can sometimes be a magnet of amusement and smiles from curious onlookers. It can be embarrassing sometimes wearing these shorts in the public when not racing. For some people, cycling shorts can be a bit revealing because it hugs the body too much, highlighting the shape of the body. I remember one time after a race, I went to a convenient tore wearing cycling shorts, when people started to stare and look at me strangely. You will feel a bit naked, like you’re revealing too much. Also, cycling shorts can sometimes be very hot. The tight fabric doesn’t allow air to circulate as much as regular shorts do. The compression can also be a bit uncomfortable, especially if it is poorly made.

When you walk around after the race, you feel too exposed and uncomfortable. The length of the shorts also indicates minimal protection. Sometimes the legs would rub together causing lesions on the skin; very painful especially when you are doing a long run. The inner thigh would be more exposed to this rubbing.
